Beeswax wraps are one of the easiest plastic-free swaps in the kitchen, and with a little care, one wrap can replace a whole lot of cling wrap. Here's how to wash, dry and store your wraps, how to bring tired ones back to life, and what to do when they're finally worn out.
How to clean beeswax wraps
- Rinse the wrap under cool running water.
- Wash gently with a soft cloth or sponge and a little mild dish soap.
- Rinse again in cool water.
- Hang it over a dish rack or lay it flat to air dry.
Always use cool water. Hot water, the dishwasher and the microwave will melt the wax and shorten the life of your wrap. If a wrap has only held bread or a sandwich, a quick wipe with a damp cloth is often all it needs.
How to dry and store your wraps
Let wraps dry fully before putting them away. Store them folded or rolled in a drawer or container, away from the stove, oven and direct sun, since heat softens the wax.
What you can (and can't) wrap
Beeswax wraps are great for fruit, veg, herbs, cheese, bread, sandwiches and snacks, and for covering bowls of leftovers. Don't use them for raw meat or fish, or for hot food. Let leftovers cool before you cover them.
How long do beeswax wraps last?
With regular use and good care, around a year. Over time the coating wears thin and the wrap loses its grip. That doesn't mean it's finished.
How to refresh old beeswax wraps
When a wrap stops clinging, you can re-wax it at home:
- Beeswax Wrap Refresh Drops: restore grip to tired wraps. Follow the instructions on the pack.
- Beeswax Wrap Repair & DIY Wax Bar: lay the wrap on a baking tray, scatter the wax evenly over it, then warm it in a low oven until it melts into the fabric. You can also use it to make new wraps from your own cotton fabric.
How to dispose of beeswax wraps
SuperBee wraps are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, beeswax, tree resin and coconut oil, with no plastic or silicone. At the end of their life, cut them into strips and add them to your compost, or use them as a natural fire starter.
Beeswax wrap care FAQs
Can I put beeswax wraps in the dishwasher?
No. The heat melts the wax. Hand wash in cool, soapy water.
Why is my wrap no longer sticky?
The wax has worn thin with use and washing. A refresh with our Refresh Drops or Wax Bar brings back the grip.
Can I use beeswax wraps in the fridge?
Yes. They're great for keeping food fresh in the fridge. Just keep them away from heat.
